An Incredible Breed
In Italy, the Gammel Dansk Hønsehund is known as the Danish Bracco.
The breed dates back to the early 1700s, created by Mr. Morten Bak, who crossed several generations of dogs (called gypsies) to create an all-white dog with brown markings—the ancestral Danish Stable Dog, commonly called Bak's Dog. These dogs partly came from gypsy dogs, which were believed to be Spanish Shepherd Dogs and/or various types of hounds.
Of average size, the body, geometrically speaking, resembles a rectangle and reflects a powerful and proud structure—the male more than the female, who is considered more elegant and refined while maintaining the same build.
Their dimorphism is very striking.
Their appearance is distinguished and proud, both in the male and female, although the female, being lighter, appears more breezy and agile.
As a dog enthusiast, one day, out of curiosity, I went out with a group of hunters to keep them company and take a trip to the mountains. I watched them in silence, I witnessed something truly remarkable. These dogs scouted, checked, and surveyed their surroundings methodically and meticulously, without being irrational or barking excessively—traits typical of some other hunting breeds.
Observing them more closely, I realized that, unlike other dogs present, they spread out over large distances yet instinctively returned to their handler with an almost innate conduct with their slow, moderate and proud galloping, as if they feel satisfaction and pride in always being in touch with those who lead them. I was surprised by their precision on the ground, especially the males, who—despite their powerful chests—moved with unexpected agility.
They do their job, the job they were born to do, using their brain, confidence, balance and brio, which are traits that attract owners, and even more so, hunters.
Then, on the way back to the cars, I observed them again. They had that content, satisfied, and happy look—because they had done what they were born to do.
Back home, they transform into house dogs—gentle, sociable, and always eager for cuddles. But one must never forget that they have a strong and confident character!
In other words, this is a hunting dog of ancient origins, used in its homeland for small game retrieval, boar hunting, and tracking. A versatile, intelligent, and very active breed, it requires physical activity.
What a dog!
An incredible breed.

The Old Danish Pointer, known in Denmark as the Gammel Dansk Hønsehund, is a historic breed with roots dating back to the 18th century. As one of Denmark’s oldest hunting dog breeds, it was specifically developed for its ability to excel in bird hunting, particularly for ground game and partridge.
Origins
The Gammel Dansk Hønsehund, or Old Danish Pointer, is a breed with a rich and fascinating history rooted in Denmark’s hunting traditions. Originally used as both a pointing dog and retriever, the breed evolved into an all-purpose working gun dog over time.
Not long ago, they were Denmark’s third most popular hunting breed based on registrations, but outside Denmark, the breed remains rare. In fact, capturing quality photos required a visit to Denmark itself. In European literature, the breed is typically referred to by their Danish name, reflecting its strong national identity.
